State Troopers Release OVI Video

A dramatic clip of a drunk driver crossing the centerline was released by the Ohio State Troopers in an attempt to make the public aware of just what drunk driving looks like. The clip, taken from the police cruiser’s dash cam, was filmed by an officer responding to a call about a reckless driver.

In the footage, you can see the tail lights of the pickup as they wander over the double yellow line. By the time the officer got close enough to use his lights, the pickup had narrowly missed a car coming in the other direction. That vehicle contained Lance Morrison; his fiancé, Summer Stillion; and their two-month-old child, Leighonna. Thankfully, they weren’t struck by the drunk – they managed to swerve onto the shoulder of the road.

The white pickup is then show as the officer pulls it over and arrests the driver. The driver, Darryl Carpenter had four previous drunk driving violations. He was arrested with a blood alcohol level of 0.268 for OVI. (In Ohio, the nomenclature was changed, lumping DWI and DUI into the new category of Operating a Vehicle Impaired.)

Both the video clip and the 911 call that led to the incident have been made available to the public as an educational resource. There is nothing like seeing the real-life footage to appreciate just what happens on the road.

While in this case there were no injuries or fatalities, the sobering fact is that the new family was simply lucky. In many cases, there is nothing you can do when a drunk driver targets your lane. If there had been more traffic or if it had been a different stretch of road, the story may have ended much differently – with a funeral instead of a video.
